Day 2 of MHA 2011

May 28th, 2011 Mormon Heretic 4 comments

I absolutely love the Mormon History Association conferences.  It is wonderful to talk to all the people that I have been writing about the past few years!  I’ve eaten lunch with Newell Bringhurst, breakfast with Richard Bushman, and received advice from Rick Turley, Gary Bergera, Armand Mauss and Barbara Walden.  Only John Hamer seems to be missing this year.

Yesterday, Paul Reeve, Associate Professor of History from the University of Utah told us that St. George was once more cosmopolitan in the early years.  It had more (raw numbers of) blacks, Chinese, Polynesians and Europeans in the early days of settlement until the past few decades.  It was a really interesting presentation.

The Wentworth Letter

January 2nd, 2011 Mormon Heretic 1 comment

I posted my initial impressions of the Kindle over at Wheat and Tares.  One of the coolest “books” I received at Amazon for free was the Wentworth Letter.  For those of you who don’t know, Joseph Smith wrote a history of the church to John Wentworth, the editor of a newspaper called the Chicago Democrat in 1842.  (I guess Joseph was more open to Democrats than most Mormons today.)  :)  The letter is an important piece of history because it contains the 13 Articles of Faith that are now part of the Pearl of Great Price.  It was fun to read the letter.  You can download it for free whether you have a Kindle or not.  If you don’t have a Kindle, download the Kindle App for your pc (or iPad, iPhone, etc).   Read more…

Trying to figure out Social Networking

October 30th, 2010 Mormon Heretic 6 comments

Ok, I created a Facebook page a few months ago, and was amazed at the increase in page views.  So, I’m now on Twitter too, and decided to update my GoodReads by adding a new page here about the books I’ve read, am reading, or want to read.  So, feel free to add me as a friend on Facebook, Twitter, or Goodreads.  Also, I’ve had the Networked Blogs up for a few months, but have only 1 follower besides myself (thanks Vickie!)  Go to the bottom and add yourself!

And if you have any other suggestions for me, I’m all ears.

MH now on Facebook

June 21st, 2010 Mormon Heretic 4 comments

Ok, I know people like to promote blogs on Facebook.  I like my relative anonymity, so I created a Facebook page, and sent out a bunch or invitations.  For some reason, it didn’t like my name, so I originally set it up as “Mo Her”, and then changed it to “Mo Heretc”.  So, I’ll friend anybody there if you would like to friend me on Facebook.  If you have any pointers for promoting on Facebook, I’m all ears.

MH Can Now be read on your Mobile Phone

May 16th, 2010 Mormon Heretic 1 comment

Ok, I did some blog changes recently, and now I have a plugin so you can read my blog much easier on your mobile phone.  I used the MobilePress plugin (see this page for more info).  I’m also looking for a good widget or plug in so I can be notified when someone makes a new post on their blog.  I’ve missed a few on the Faithful Dissident‘s blog, and I’d like to prevent that in the future.  It’s too hard to visit all my favorite blogs, and I need some sort of widget to help be out.  Any ideas?  (Also feel free to post other cool widgets and plugins here.)  My last post on mobilefeeds was a dud, so I don’t recommend that.

Get a Gravatar!

Ok, I’ve been wanting to add photos to my comments for quite some time, but didn’t know how to do it. So, I must give thanks to Andrew S and Irresistible (Dis)Grace for his post titled, A Junk Post about my commenting frustrations, where he compares the differences between WordPress and Blogspot.  I agree with Andrew in that I really like WordPress more than Blogspot, but this whole gravatar thing has really been bugging me, because it is one of the few things that Blogspot does better than WordPress.  So, if you would like to have a picture next to your comment (on this and other WordPress blogs), here’s how to do it!

My 100th post

April 15th, 2009 Mormon Heretic 7 comments

The Faithful Dissident recently had a post commemorating her 1st anniversary as a blogger.  Since I let my 1st anniversary pass without fanfare (in January), I decided to do a sort of anniversary when I reached my 100th post.
